JUSTINE MEYER
Drawing (ink, graphite, charcoal), Painting (watercolor, oil, acrylic), Barn Quilts, Collages, Murals
I create art because I have a strong motivation and intention to make something beautiful, often with emphasis on highlighting overlooked or hidden details. While my medium and style aren’t strongly defined, I prefer watercolor and ink because it lends itself very well towards my illustrative approach. I have always been a fan of comic books, newspaper comics and animated cartoons, and this interest has had a recurring influence in my style evident with linework, use of color, and definition of objects or shapes in a scene. I find inspiration in nature and from artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Norman Rockwell, Will Rochfort, and Mark Maggiori. My favorite part of the artistic process is adding the fine-tuned details to complete a piece, but I enjoy the early stages of the process as well. My ideas and vision for a piece develop in sometimes unexpected ways, which makes creating exciting for me!
Meet the artist
Justine Meyer was raised in Meire Grove, Minnesota, and grew up on a Stearns County century farm south of town. Entering her 4-H art projects, cake decorating, and photography at the Stearns County Fair was the highlight of every summer and her earliest introduction to art exhibition. She attended St. John’s-St. Andrews in Meire Grove and Greenwald for elementary school, later switching to St. John’s Preparatory in Collegeville for middle and high school. Graduating in 2020, Justine continued her education at the University of Minnesota Duluth and completed her Bachelor of Arts in Communication, with Minors in Art and Environmental Sustainability in December 2023. In every year of school, she was in an art class out of academic and spiritual necessity. In her final semester of college, Justine took the opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy to complete her Art minor. She traveled to different cities in Italy, Germany, Portugal, France and the Netherlands to see the art museums and in the streets, which provided a great deal of inspiration and reference photos. After graduation, she moved home to live with her parents and sisters and started managing the family produce business, Marvin’s Gardens. On July 23, 2024, Justine was appointed as the Stearns County Area 1 Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor, the first woman on the board in the district’s 75-year history. She is currently taking commissions for paintings, logo design, murals and barn quilts in the off-season and substitute teaching at St. John’s Prep.
